As a grade schooler in La Salle, Atty. Pablo M. Gancayco, showed early signs of leadership.  He was consistently elected as President of the Honors Class to which he belonged.  He engaged in sports, and with self-discipline and determination, even became a member of the Champion Football Team of his school.  His well-rounded personality developed from his joining and being an officer of various extra-curricular organizations.  This included membership in the editorial board of the school newspaper.

In AteneoHigh School, Atty. Gancayco again was a member of the prestigious Honors’ Class of his batch.  Just like in Grade School, his leadership qualities earned him the confidence of his classmates who always voted him as Class President.  The sportsman in him did not die down as he became a player of the Ateneo High School Volleyball Team which during his time enjoyed the NCAA Volleyball Championship.  His early talent in singing was further honed in the Ateneo High School Glee Club of which he became President.  It was during his Presidency that the choral group attained highest esteem in the music arena having a chain of successful solo shows and joint concerts with glee clubs of exclusive girls’ schools.  Even as an officer and an active member of several other organizations at the Ateneo, he still was a consistent recipient of Honors Certificates.

In College at the University of the Philippines, he maintained his academic standards and received in the process numerous Honors Certificates.  He was a Vice-Illustrious Fellow of the Upsilon Sigma Phi, a Vice-President of the Pre-Med Society, an officer and a member of the U.P. Concert Chorus, St. Thomas More Study Group (Law) and the U.P. Student Catholic Action.  He co-organized the U.P. Law Charivari, the only choral singing group existing in a law school.  He was also a member of the singing group, the Ambivalent Crowd.  While in College, he taught Speed Reading in various schools including U.P. under PROSEC.

After College, he worked as a legal researcher in the Court of Appeals, and when his father Justice Emilio A. Gancayco was promoted as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, he served as his Private Secretary.  He eventually engaged in the private practice of law by joining the firm Ledesma, Saludo& Associates in 1987, rising from the ranks until he became a Junior Partner in said firm.

In 1991, after his father Justice Gancayco retired from the Supreme Court, he and other prominent lawyers organized a new law firm which they named Gancayco Law Offices of which he became the Managing Partner.  Said firm eventually evolved into its present name the Gancayco, Balasbas& Associates Law Offices.  The firm is in the general practice of law and has distinguished itself by being in the fore-front of a lot of sensational and popular cases and other legal activities.

In 1995, when then President Fidel V. Ramos created the Presidential Fact-Finding and Policy Advisory Commission on the Protection of Overseas Filipinos (Gancayco Commission) headed by his father, Justice Emilio A. Gancayco, to investigate not only the case of FlorContemplacion, but more especially the plight of overseas workers worldwide, he was designated as Chief Legal Counsel to head a panel of lawyers who actively assisted in the work of the Commission.  One of his notable achievements was to prepare the several reports and recommendations of the Gancayco Commission to the President of the Philippines.  It is the final report he prepared for the Commission that became the basis of the passage of the Migrant Workers’ Act by Congress for the protection of the welfare of the OCWs which now benefits the multitude of Filipino workers toiling abroad.

As a lawyer, he has distinguished himself as an expert in Intellectual Property Law having attended numerous conventions, seminars and courses on the subject here and abroad and being an officer and a member of various local and international intellectual property associations.  Every year since 1989, he has been invited or has attended lawyers’ conventions, conferences, seminars and courses on Intellectual Property or otherwise here, in the ASEAN countries, in Asian countries, the U.S.A., and in Europe, usually as a speaker, lecturer, rapporteur or resource person.  His firm maintains working correspondence not only with local law offices but also with foreign firms in practically all countries in the world.

His expertise in Intellectual Property, and in Commercial Law in general, has exposed him extensively in contracts, negotiations, licensing, franchising and technology transfer works in various fields, such as manufacturing, trading, tourism, pharmaceuticals, banking, investments and agri-business.  His expert advice is most sought after by foreign companies intending to invest in the Philippines.  In the process, he was able to develop professional and fiduciary relations with many foreign and local entities and personalities.

He has also distinguished himself in the field of Entertainment Law where he counts as his clients several prominent personalities involved in the entertainment business such as Boy Abunda, Erich Gonzales, Ai-Ai de las Alas, VerniVarga, Ariel Rivera, Jaya, Ronnie and Mariz Rickets, Dessa, The Company, entertainment writer Ricky Lo, and so many other entertainment personalities.

All the time, he has maintained his adeptness in litigation and corporate law practice.

He is a meticulous organizer.  He was at the forefront in the organization of the convention of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association held in Cebu, an event attended by about a thousand foreign and local lawyers.  He was also the organizer of the Ateneo Alumni Homecoming held in December 2000 which was attended by more than a thousand former and present Ateneans and guests.  In 2008, he was the Chairman of the committee which organized the ASEAN Intellectual Property Association Annual Conference held at the Renaissance Hotel and attended by at least 300 foreign and local delegates.

In March 2011, he will co-organize with the officers of the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA) a seminar in patent law and practice in Manila, which is expected to be attended by at least 300 Japanese and Filipino intellectual property law practitioners.  And in November 2011, he will again be the key organizer of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association convention in Manila which is expected to be attended by no less than 1,300 foreign and local delegates.

As President of his Rotary Club, he successfully launched the BEST COP Awards whereby deserving policemen carefully selected nationwide are given cash awards and certificates of merit.  Since that time up to the present, this project has been receiving the highest awards from Rotary, the government, and various organizations and sectors of society.  This project, now known as the COPS awards, has been yearly implemented by the club in cooperation with the Metrobank Foundation and PS Bank.  It has been providing incentives to members of the police force to do their best in order to serve the Philippine community to the best of their abilities in an honest and incorruptible manner.   For many years now, the awards are given by no less than the President of the Republic of the Philippines to the deserving policemen.

As the District Governor of Rotary International District 3780 for RY 2010-2011, he presides over 97 Rotary Clubs in Quezon City with membership of almost 2,600 professionals, businessmen and community leaders.  He leads the Rotarians in conducting numerous service projects nationwide for our less fortunate brothers and sisters, and in their quest to promote high ethical standards in their vocation.

He is a loving husband and a doting father.  His strong marriage to singing lawyer Dot Ramos has produced two beautiful children:  Jon-jon, 23, and Mika, 15.  His wife Dot is a writer for the Philippine Star, the Vice-President of the Congressional Staff Association, the P.R.O. of the Association of Congressional Chiefs of Staff, and the Chairman for Social and Special Events at the Celebrity Club.  Dot is the President and owner of:  Celebrations Dot Com P.R. and Entertaining Company, Shine! Dot Com tutorial and MusicSchool, G.B.GancaycoArtGallery and is also the entertainment manager of Boulvar Lounge at the Manila Pavilion.  She is Class Representative of UP College of Law Batch ’85 and a Deputy for the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).  Jon-jon is a graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Communications Technology Management.  He is now employed, but he maintains his own businesses as well.  Mika graduated as an Honorable Mention at the MiriamGrade School, and is now in second year at the country’s top high school, the Philippine Science High School.
