The Kuala Lumpur ASEAN IPA annual general meeting and conference were held in Pullman Kuala Lumpur City Centre Hotel & Residences from 4- 6 March 2016. The event had proved to be an excellent opportunity for professionals in ASEAN and elsewhere to participate and observe the discussions in the existing and future direction of intellectual property laws and practices in the ASEAN region in various aspects of the IP protection. As always, the event was also to provide an unequaled opportunity for the attendees to see old friends, meet new ones and learn something about the cultural heritage of the hosting venue.
The topics of the 2016 ASEAN IPA Conference focused on the strategic ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2016-2025, the WIPO’s support of the ASEAN IP system, the mini-Madrid for ASEAN, the update on IP Laws in several countries, some emerging IP issues affecting ASEAN (particularly the plain packaging issue, and the TPP Agreement), the discussion on the protection of generic resources, traditional knowledge and cultural expressions, and the illicit trade off counterfeits from a business perspective.
There were more than 200 participants to attend such a Conference who are both IP professional as well as non-IP professional and come from both ASEAN and non-ASEAN countries. The 2016 ASEAN IPA Conference was presented by seasoned in-house counsels/experts speakers from Japan, Singapore, Philippines, and Vietnam, and representatives from various organizations such as the WIPO Singapore Office, the ASEAN Intellectual Property Association (ASEAN IPA), the ASEAN Working Group on Intellectual Property Cooperation (AWGIPC), the EU-ASEAN Project on the Protection of Intellectual Property Right (ECAP III), the International Chamber of Commerce’s Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (ICC BASCAP), the Departments of Intellectual Property of Cambodia and Myanmar, and the European Chamber of Commerce (Singapore).
